The Dominica World Creole Music Festival is a vibes!

The Dominica World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) is pure vibes — this cannot be disputed! 🎢 Every year, I never actually *plan* to attend; maybe it’s because I live right here in Dominica, so deciding on the same day feels effortless. But whenever I do go, I absolutely love the experience.

I hear the occasional criticism that the festival should feature *only* Creole music, but honestly, that mix of genres is what makes it special for me. It’s like attending a concert of global sounds — reggae, dancehall, soca, bouyon, zouk, and more. I don’t think I could enjoy three straight nights of only Creole music, and I’m glad the lineup celebrates diversity.

I also enjoy the artist-fan connection — the walk-through moments, the shoutouts when the camera catches someone singing every lyric. And while I’m no daybreak specialist πŸ˜…, I always try to stay up to see ASA Bantan’s entrance. Still, I can’t lie — staying awake for 12 hours straight isn’t for me! I often find myself dozing off in the stadium stands, and as the years pass, that nap gets even more necessary. I’ve accepted it — I’m not “Team No Sleep,” and that’s okay!

What I truly love is how the festival brings people together — hanging out with friends, meeting new ones, and connecting with different cultures. Seeing everyone just having a good time is priceless.

Economically, no one can deny the festival’s impact on our community. From taxi operators and makeup artists to seamstresses, restaurateurs, and even sanitary engineers — it’s an opportunity for everyone to earn, and I love that for my people.

That said, I’m also of the opinion that the festival sometimes steals the spotlight from our Independence Season. Twenty-five years ago, there was no World Creole Music Festival, yet our cultural celebrations stood strong. While we must not let the culture fade, every effort should be made to ensure that the World Creole Music Festival *complements* rather than overshadows our traditions. Both can shine — our heritage and our festival.

The WCMF is a true Dominican gem, and I wish it continued growth and sustainability. Long live the vibes, long live the culture, and long live the World Creole Music Festival! πŸ‡©πŸ‡²✨
